More on A Conversation with Jack Rayder
Anyone following Jack, on Twitter, a few months ago, would not be surprised to learn that October 31st is his favorite day of the year. This past October, both he and Lukas appeared in a production of Rocky Horror Picture Show, combining two of Jacks’ loves, musical theater and Halloween.
For Halloween, Jack came up with a perfect last minute costume, dressing up as James Dean. I may have uncovered a clue to Jack’s costume for next year. Although somewhat less iconic than the American institution, a seed may have been planted when I asked if Jack had any fetishes.
“The whole doctor thing, the whole teacher thing, locker rooms,” he started.
“Like role playing?” I asked and he nodded. “I’m thinking LARP (Live Action Role Play) now,” I told him.
“Oh my god no!” He laughed. “No LARPing. Well, I don’t know, maybe I’ll make Lukas dress up as Link and I’ll dress up as male Zelda and we’ll get it on.”
It didn’t happen if there are no pictures. Do you hear that, Jack? It didn’t happen, if there are no pictures.
“In high school, and stuff, I always looked at the jocks kind of like, forbidden fruit, like the guys that I could never have,” he told me, going back to his locker room fantasies. What a difference a few years have made. The jocks aren’t forbidden fruit anymore.
He and Lukas just celebrated their first anniversary. They don’t live together, but I interviewed Jack, via Skype, from Lukas’ apartment in Northern California. They met on Jackd, the mobile dating app, and their first date was at Chipotle. That was before they charged you extra for guacamole. A little further into the interview, we talked about how they manage a healthy relationship while both working in the industry.
“It’s really difficult,” Jack started. “It’s already hard being young people and trying to make a relationship work. Lukas and I just have a lot of trust and communication that goes on. You have to know that, if you’re going to be in the industry, you can’t let your jealousy get the best of you.”
“Something you learn is you can consciously say ‘Oh no, it’s fine. I’m not jealous,’ but sometimes that jealousy just creeps back in,” he continued. “Then you just have to push it back and tell yourself, ‘No, this is okay. This is the world we are in’.”
While he conceded that it is definitely hard, Jack felt with a lot of communication, just like in any relationship, it can work. I asked him if he felt one of them drove the communication a little more than the other and he indicated it was him, the extrovert, who sometimes insisted they talk. “I could have sex with anybody (while filming) and it’s not gonna change the way that I feel about him,” he said. “To me sex and love are different and I love him and I choose to be with him. I want to be with him.” To Jack, the rest really doesn’t have to matter, if you consciously make the decision not to let it.
His face lights up when he talks about Lukas. There’s an animation there that’s really quite beautiful. Anyone who caught one of their live cam shows on Guys in Sweatpants certainly couldn’t deny their very obvious rapport. If you look closely, though, it appears to go much deeper. They’re in each other’s corner in a way that makes anyone outside, looking in, truly want to root for them.
“If you could have lunch with three celebrities who would you pick?”
“All at once or separate?” He asked me, smiling. He clearly liked the question, especially when I clarified, he’d be dining with them altogether. His picks for dining companions, after warning me it would be a “really gay gathering,” were Meryl Streep, Stephen Sondheim and Lady Gaga. Aaron Johnson from Kick Ass and Savages is at the top of his famous person sex list, in case you were wondering.
A fan of Inside the Actor’s Studio, I’ve always loved the sort of rapid fire, one word answer questions James Lipton asks towards the end of every interview. The word association aspect, I think, is fun. Jack seemed to agree.

It was a Friday night, and Jack was anxious to hang out with his boyfriend, so we wound things up there. I did ask him if he had filmed any scenes that hadn’t been released yet. Without giving anything away that might get either of us in trouble with JJ, I can report that there is one scene coming up and I, for one, am extremely excited to see what Cockyboys, and life, have in store for Jack Rayder.
